Lucius Junius Brutus

Founder of the Roman Republic, and one of its first two consuls in 509 BC.

Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar

Roman general, statesman and ultimately dictator until his assassination on the Ides of March. He played a critical role in the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.

Charlemagne

Charles the Great, King of the Franks

742 – 814, Aachen

First emperor in western Europe since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire; King of the Franks, King of the Lombards; crowned Emperor of the West by Pope Leo III and considered the forerunner to the line of Holy Roman Emperor’s.

Song Dynasty

(Northern)

960 – 1127

The Northern Song Dynasty was a golden age of Chinese culture, economy, and technology. It saw advancements in printing and trade, along with flourishing urban centers. Landscape painting and Neo-Confucianism thrived, shaping Chinese aesthetics and philosophy. The most famous emperor is Emperor Huizong (r. 1100 – 1126), renowned for his artistic talent and patronage of the arts. Despite economic strength, military weaknesses led to its downfall when the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty captured the capital, Kaifeng, forcing the court to flee south, marking the transition to the Southern Song Dynasty.

William of Orange
